Each task description is created individually with a specific end result in mind. However, there are common mistakes that hinder freelancers from understanding the task and starting their work.
Abstract Formulations & Unclear Requirements. Many clients fall into this trap. By stating a requirement like "create a functional website" or "prepare an original design," it’s impossible to expect a wow result from the freelancer. These are immeasurable parameters, and what is functional to the freelancer may not be functional to you. Clearly outline the requirements for the task and the expected outcome. If it's difficult to explain in words, provide references for clarity.
Unrealistic Deadlines. Do not set deadlines based solely on your guess. You may not know all the intricacies of the work, and there could be parts of it that require time. No freelancer will take on a project with overly tight deadlines. Assess them realistically and include some cushion time for revisions. If necessary, consult with the freelancer about how much time they will need to complete the task.
Minimalist Descriptions. An overly brief description may miss important details, so avoid super short project briefs. It is essential to outline all nuances, the essence, purpose, and objectives of the project, format, characteristics, requirements for services and tools, etc. This way, the freelancer will better understand whether they can achieve the desired result. Additionally, they won’t have to spend time on constant clarifications, saving you from endless revisions due to misunderstandings.
Endless Descriptions. This extreme is not helpful either. When a technical assignment looks like a wall of text, it can be very difficult to comprehend. If by the time you finish reading, you forget what was at the beginning, it’s probably a description that is too long. Just like minimalist briefs, long descriptions may lead to constant questions, clarifications, and revisions.
Unrealistic Requirements. When a customer has a poor understanding of their freelancer’s field, they may demand the impossible. For example, an SEO specialist should get a brand new website into the top three search results within two weeks. Such a demand cannot be met even by the most advanced freelancer, as it is technically impossible.
Oral Discussions of Agreements. Without documenting them in writing, it will be impossible to prove them in case of disputes and to monitor what was agreed upon. Over time, everything said is forgotten, which means some requirements and nuances of the project will be overlooked. Therefore, try to record all oral discussions and ensure that both you and the freelancer understood each other correctly.
